01Classify the legal seller first.
A provider is labeled Merchant of Record only when first-party terms or documentation say it becomes the seller or reseller for the transaction. Tax calculation, billing software, fraud tools, and checkout products do not qualify on their own.
02Prefer primary evidence.
Pricing pages, contracts, eligibility documentation, API documentation, and official support policies support factual claims. Vendor comparisons can reveal questions, but they do not establish a competitor's facts.
03Keep price formulas honest.
Public, negotiated, method-based, country-specific, and contradictory pricing are separate states. The calculator exposes assumptions and refuses to produce exact estimates when the documentation does not support one.
04Review changing facts.
Every profile shows a last-reviewed and next-review date. Preview status, seller countries, product restrictions, fees, and migration behavior receive shorter review windows when they are changing quickly.
05Do not rank without a model.
There are no stars, universal winners, or unexplained scores. Recommendations name the business scenario, retained responsibilities, documented tradeoffs, and unknowns.
06Separate information from advice.
This publication explains provider documentation and operating choices. It is not legal, tax, or accounting advice. Verify contracts and obligations with qualified advisers for your business.
07Label stories as stories.
Founder accounts, Reddit discussions, engineering posts, and customer stories can reveal questions and possible failure modes. They do not establish frequency, current provider policy, or every side of a disputed event.
08Keep the evidence hierarchy visible.
Contracts and official documentation support current factual claims. Engineering accounts explain implementation. Customer and community stories add lived context. Promotional comparisons remain prompts for independent verification.
09Do not confuse a product with its parent.
Company records label whether financial figures describe the provider, a product segment, or a public parent. A parent's revenue and headcount show resources, not the economics or staffing of one checkout product.
10Prefer an honest blank to a private-company estimate.
Funding announcements, valuation events, payment volume, and customer counts are not revenue. When current revenue, profit, team size, or acquisition terms are not published, the guide says so explicitly.
